Narrative:

Our flight was #1 for takeoff on runway 30L. We thought tower made the following transmission: 'air carrier X cleared for immediate takeoff runway 30L.' as I applied power to take the active runway, I saw the DC9 on final and asked the first officer to confirm the takeoff clearance was for us because I thought the aircraft on final was very close. Following the first officer's request for confirmation, tower rebroadcast the takeoff clearance. The DC9 immediately asked tower 'who did you just clear for takeoff?' at this point tower realized the conflict and directed our flight to hold short of runway 30L. We stopped clear of the runway but past the hold short line. After the DC9 landed, I asked tower who they really had cleared for takeoff. They had cleared cpr yx for an intersection takeoff on runway 30L. The similar call signs and tower misunderstanding our inquiry for confirmation led to a misunderstanding of communications between ATC and the aircraft.

Title: A B737-200 TAXIES PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE WHEN REPLYING TO A WRONG CALL SIGN FOR TKOF CLRNC. THIS INITIAL CONFUSION LEADS TO FURTHER CONFUSION AS TO WHO WAS CLRED FOR TKOF.

Narrative: OUR FLT WAS #1 FOR TKOF ON RWY 30L. WE THOUGHT TWR MADE THE FOLLOWING XMISSION: 'ACR X CLRED FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF RWY 30L.' AS I APPLIED PWR TO TAKE THE ACTIVE RWY, I SAW THE DC9 ON FINAL AND ASKED THE FO TO CONFIRM THE TKOF CLRNC WAS FOR US BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE ACFT ON FINAL WAS VERY CLOSE. FOLLOWING THE FO'S REQUEST FOR CONFIRMATION, TWR REBROADCAST THE TKOF CLRNC. THE DC9 IMMEDIATELY ASKED TWR 'WHO DID YOU JUST CLR FOR TKOF?' AT THIS POINT TWR REALIZED THE CONFLICT AND DIRECTED OUR FLT TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30L. WE STOPPED CLR OF THE RWY BUT PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. AFTER THE DC9 LANDED, I ASKED TWR WHO THEY REALLY HAD CLRED FOR TKOF. THEY HAD CLRED CPR YX FOR AN INTXN TKOF ON RWY 30L. THE SIMILAR CALL SIGNS AND TWR MISUNDERSTANDING OUR INQUIRY FOR CONFIRMATION LED TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF COMS BTWN ATC AND THE ACFT.
