Narrative:

Emergency declared 40 NM northwest of ilm VOR. Direct to rdu initiated. Aircraft stopped on taxiway T4 where it was met by crash fire rescue equipment equipment. Aft air stairs deployed. #2 and #4 flight attendants evacuate/evacuationed to local hospital. Fire chief briefed captain on status of aircraft, and it was decided to taxi the aircraft to the gate. This was the most expeditious manner concerning possible smoke and fumes entering in cabin again. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated when the ovens were cleaned on the overnight layover all of the cleaning chemical was not removed and the interior of the oven contained a heavy residue of cleaning agent.

Title: A B727-200 IN CRUISE AT FL330 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO AN AFT GALLEY OVEN SMELL AND SMOKE CAUSED BY OVEN CLEANING CHEMICALS NOT REMOVED.

Narrative: EMER DECLARED 40 NM NW OF ILM VOR. DIRECT TO RDU INITIATED. ACFT STOPPED ON TXWY T4 WHERE IT WAS MET BY CFR EQUIP. AFT AIR STAIRS DEPLOYED. #2 AND #4 FLT ATTENDANTS EVACED TO LCL HOSPITAL. FIRE CHIEF BRIEFED CAPT ON STATUS OF ACFT, AND IT WAS DECIDED TO TAXI THE ACFT TO THE GATE. THIS WAS THE MOST EXPEDITIOUS MANNER CONCERNING POSSIBLE SMOKE AND FUMES ENTERING IN CABIN AGAIN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED WHEN THE OVENS WERE CLEANED ON THE OVERNIGHT LAYOVER ALL OF THE CLEANING CHEMICAL WAS NOT REMOVED AND THE INTERIOR OF THE OVEN CONTAINED A HVY RESIDUE OF CLEANING AGENT.
