Narrative:

I landed on runway 23 at gso at night and proceeded along the parallel taxiway to intersection J3 to enter the ramp area. I was using the centerline and blue taxiway lights for guidance. I felt a 'dragging' 1/2 way through the turn which soon stopped and I proceeded to the gate. During the 'dragging,' I looked left to see a cause and remarked that 'at least it isn't a taxiway excursion' because the blue lights were well out from the left side of the aircraft. I went out to check the left gear and found a thin area of dust on each tire sidewall. Coordination with maintenance, ramp supervisor, and outbound captain concluded the aircraft was undamaged. The next morning, as I taxied out by the same intersection, I noticed a rut in the dirt near where I had been the night before. The taxiway lights are very far out in the dirt from the paved surface and useless as an aid to keep aircraft safely on concrete.

Title: CAPT OF A B727 TURNED SHORT DURING TAXI, CAUSING THE L MAIN GEAR TO GO OFF THE TXWY ONTO THE DIRT. NO DAMAGE TO THE WHEELS, OR LNDG GEAR WERE OBSERVED BY FLC OR MAINT PERSONNEL.

Narrative: I LANDED ON RWY 23 AT GSO AT NIGHT AND PROCEEDED ALONG THE PARALLEL TXWY TO INTXN J3 TO ENTER THE RAMP AREA. I WAS USING THE CTRLINE AND BLUE TXWY LIGHTS FOR GUIDANCE. I FELT A 'DRAGGING' 1/2 WAY THROUGH THE TURN WHICH SOON STOPPED AND I PROCEEDED TO THE GATE. DURING THE 'DRAGGING,' I LOOKED L TO SEE A CAUSE AND REMARKED THAT 'AT LEAST IT ISN'T A TXWY EXCURSION' BECAUSE THE BLUE LIGHTS WERE WELL OUT FROM THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT. I WENT OUT TO CHK THE L GEAR AND FOUND A THIN AREA OF DUST ON EACH TIRE SIDEWALL. COORD WITH MAINT, RAMP SUPVR, AND OUTBOUND CAPT CONCLUDED THE ACFT WAS UNDAMAGED. THE NEXT MORNING, AS I TAXIED OUT BY THE SAME INTXN, I NOTICED A RUT IN THE DIRT NEAR WHERE I HAD BEEN THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE TXWY LIGHTS ARE VERY FAR OUT IN THE DIRT FROM THE PAVED SURFACE AND USELESS AS AN AID TO KEEP ACFT SAFELY ON CONCRETE.
