Narrative:

ATC cleared us to 15000 ft, however, first officer selected 17000 ft in altitude selector. As we leveled off at 17000 ft, ATC told us we were cleared to 15000 ft and asked if we wanted 17000 ft as a final. We stayed at 17000 ft after we were cleared. I could have avoided the situation if I would have finished watching the first officer select the proper altitude. The controller did not mention a violation or that he would report this.
