Narrative:

Landing long. Went off end of runway into soft dirt/sand. Misjudgement on the part of PIC. Contributing factor: from the air, the soft dirt/sand area at the north end of runway 33 looks like old pavement overrun area. This visual illusion led me to believe there was a usable emergency overrun. This may have subconsciously lulled me into accepting a long landing. I have spoken with others who are aware of this illusion. It is my understanding a considerable number of aircraft have overshot this runway.

Narrative: LNDG LONG. WENT OFF END OF RWY INTO SOFT DIRT/SAND. MISJUDGEMENT ON THE PART OF PIC. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: FROM THE AIR, THE SOFT DIRT/SAND AREA AT THE N END OF RWY 33 LOOKS LIKE OLD PAVEMENT OVERRUN AREA. THIS VISUAL ILLUSION LED ME TO BELIEVE THERE WAS A USABLE EMER OVERRUN.
