Narrative:
Copilot was flying. We were instructed to fly heading 030 degrees, and to 'expect' direct chardon VOR. I responded, and the copilot turned to the heading. I looked down for about 1 min into my flight kit to get out some charts and approach plates. When I looked up we were heading 050 degrees -- direct for chardon. At that moment, ZOB called and asked our heading, then instructed a left turn back to 030 degrees. The other aircraft passed 1000 ft below and 5 NM to our right. We got a TCASII TA, but not an RA.
