Narrative:

We took off runway 33 on the northwest noise abatement P56 departure from dca. The SID calls for a left turn to join the river or the dca 328 degree radial, but from runway 33 the correct turn would be right to join the river. After departure the first officer misinterped the SID and advised a left turn. ATC then asked where we were going. At that time I reviewed the SID and realized we should have made a right turn. We then corrected to the right but had already deviated more than 30 degrees. Pilots departing runway 33 should be advised of an initial heading or revise the SID for runway 33 to turn right to join the river.
