Narrative:

Due to numerous solid lines of thunderstorms along our filed route, ATC rerted us south along the mississippi and louisiana coast. A check of the new route showed that we would remain within 50 NM of the shoreline. We told ZHU that we were not overwater equipped and would need to stay within 50 NM. Subsequent convective activity dictated further deviation. ZHU advised we would have to deviate north to remain within 50 NM. The radar showed solid red and I informed ZHU that I would exercise emergency authority/authorized. Approximately 15 mins we were able to turn back to course. FMC position showed 70 NM offshore at the point we turned back to course.
