Narrative:

Departing teb on 280 degree heading climbing to 1500 ft MSL we received an RA and upon looking at TCASII saw an unknown aircraft 100 ft below us. I immediately pulled up to avoid the target which caused aircraft to climb to 2000 ft MSL before I could reduce power and descend back to 1500 ft. Copilot told ewr departure what had just happened and the reason we were at 2000 ft. ATC reminded us of the altitude restr of 1500 ft whereupon copilot again explained why we had climbed above 1500 ft. Controller acknowledged copilot's explanation and no more was said about situation.
