Narrative:

After a 4.5 hour delay prior to starting trip we were climbing to FL310. Aircraft in shallow climb (300-500 FPM). Nearing FL310, ACARS alert and subsequent message distracted crew and level off was not engaged. Altitude alert and ATC questioned. Altitude approximately 300 ft high and immediate correction was made. No traffic conflict occurred. Factors: long delay and less than sharp situational awareness due to some degree of fatigue.

Title: A B727 CLBED THROUGH ASSIGNED ALT AFTER PASSING ROD VOR.

Narrative: AFTER A 4.5 HR DELAY PRIOR TO STARTING TRIP WE WERE CLBING TO FL310. ACFT IN SHALLOW CLB (300-500 FPM).
