Narrative:

We were issued a cruise clearance to 4000 ft so that we could attempt to find the private ranch strip. Shortly after receiving this clearance we lost radio communication with center. After attempting to contact ATC for approximately 3-5 mins, we decided to climb to a higher altitude since we had passed our destination without seeing it. We departed 4000 ft and established radio contact with ZHU by 7000 ft. The controller then stated that we were not to climb above 6000 ft.
