Narrative:

XX10Z, ord departure, 10000 ft. On departure roll at ord, smelled fumes, similar to hot pack, climbing through 10000 ft. Flight attendant informed us of strong smell of hot fumes in cabin and lavatory smoke detector chiming. Fumes were distinctly noticeable in cockpit also. Donned oxygen masks, declared emergency, returned to ord. Odor of fumes dissipated. Elected not to evacuate/evacuation after further assessment from cabin and ord crash fire rescue equipment. Upon arrival at gate, maintenance found fault message 'forward equipment detection.' landed overweight. Supplemental information from acn 425163: 5 mins after takeoff, into the climb, the smoke detector in the lavatory behind first class sounded. There was no smoke or fire. However, there was an electrical smell in that immediate area. The captain was forced to communicate with the #1 flight attendant via the PA system.

Narrative: XX10Z, ORD DEP, 10000 FT. ON DEP ROLL AT ORD, SMELLED FUMES, SIMILAR TO HOT PACK, CLBING THROUGH 10000 FT. FLT ATTENDANT INFORMED US OF STRONG SMELL OF HOT FUMES IN CABIN AND LAVATORY SMOKE DETECTOR CHIMING. FUMES WERE DISTINCTLY NOTICEABLE IN COCKPIT ALSO. DONNED OXYGEN MASKS, DECLARED EMER, RETURNED TO ORD. ODOR OF FUMES DISSIPATED. ELECTED NOT TO EVAC AFTER FURTHER ASSESSMENT FROM CABIN AND ORD CFR. UPON ARR AT GATE, MAINT FOUND FAULT MESSAGE 'FORWARD EQUIP DETECTION.' LANDED OVERWT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 425163: 5 MINS AFTER TKOF, INTO THE CLB, THE SMOKE DETECTOR IN THE LAVATORY BEHIND FIRST CLASS SOUNDED. THERE WAS NO SMOKE OR FIRE. HOWEVER, THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL SMELL IN THAT IMMEDIATE AREA. THE CAPT WAS FORCED TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT VIA THE PA SYS.
