Narrative:

After landing at lga, our assigned gate was open but the alley blocked. Ramp control cleared us to come in when the alley was clear. We were holding on taxiway B between taxiway G and taxiway F facing southwest. When we saw that the alley was clear, it looked to us like we could turn left on taxiway F and proceed across taxiway a to the ramp. Because of ground frequency congestion, I was unable to obtain a timely clearance. Seeing no apparent conflict with traffic on taxiway a, the captain -- without clearance -- turned left on taxiway F and across taxiway a to the ramp. Ground control noted what we were doing and expressed their displeasure with this decision to taxi without their clearance.

Title: MD80 CREW TAXIES ACROSS RAMP AT LGA WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT LGA, OUR ASSIGNED GATE WAS OPEN BUT THE ALLEY BLOCKED. RAMP CTL CLRED US TO COME IN WHEN THE ALLEY WAS CLR. WE WERE HOLDING ON TXWY B BTWN TXWY G AND TXWY F FACING SW. WHEN WE SAW THAT THE ALLEY WAS CLR, IT LOOKED TO US LIKE WE COULD TURN L ON TXWY F AND PROCEED ACROSS TXWY A TO THE RAMP. BECAUSE OF GND FREQ CONGESTION, I WAS UNABLE TO OBTAIN A TIMELY CLRNC. SEEING NO APPARENT CONFLICT WITH TFC ON TXWY A, THE CAPT -- WITHOUT CLRNC -- TURNED L ON TXWY F AND ACROSS TXWY A TO THE RAMP. GND CTL NOTED WHAT WE WERE DOING AND EXPRESSED THEIR DISPLEASURE WITH THIS DECISION TO TAXI WITHOUT THEIR CLRNC.
