Narrative:

While doing first officer IOE, he flew the loupe 9 departure by hand. While turning back towards the sjc VOR, we were cleared to 12000 ft until crossing the sjc VOR and then cleared to FL230. The mode control panel was set to 12000 ft but the first officer continued climbing through 12000 ft. We got to 12700 ft before I got the climb stopped and back down to 12000 ft. On this complicated departure and considering the first officer's background (B757 first officer -- non glass) I should have had him put the autoplt on and unload him. Autoflt would have leveled us off at 12000 ft.

Title: FO OF A B757 OVERSHOT SID INTERMEDIATE XING ALT DURING DEP. CAPT, WHO WAS GIVING THE FO AN IOE CHK, NOTED THE MISTAKE AND THE FO RETURNED TO THE PUBLISHED XING RESTR ALT.

Narrative: WHILE DOING FO IOE, HE FLEW THE LOUPE 9 DEP BY HAND. WHILE TURNING BACK TOWARDS THE SJC VOR, WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT UNTIL XING THE SJC VOR AND THEN CLRED TO FL230. THE MODE CTL PANEL WAS SET TO 12000 FT BUT THE FO CONTINUED CLBING THROUGH 12000 FT. WE GOT TO 12700 FT BEFORE I GOT THE CLB STOPPED AND BACK DOWN TO 12000 FT. ON THIS COMPLICATED DEP AND CONSIDERING THE FO'S BACKGROUND (B757 FO -- NON GLASS) I SHOULD HAVE HAD HIM PUT THE AUTOPLT ON AND UNLOAD HIM. AUTOFLT WOULD HAVE LEVELED US OFF AT 12000 FT.
