Narrative:

I am a first officer with 50 hours in type on the B737, and I was scheduled to fly with a new captain. On the descent into msp, we were assigned to cross shonn intersection at 11000 ft, the captain was the PF. I left the frequency to get ATIS and call company. After I returned, the center controller advised us to call approach and also advised us that we were assigned to cross shonn intersection at 11000 ft. At this point we had already passed the intersection and we were about 13500 ft. This could have been avoided if at least 1 person in the cockpit had more experience, and also if I checked the exact location of shonn intersection and our altitude, before I left the frequency. Shonn intersection is on the sketr 1 arrival (sketr.SKETR1) to msp.
