Narrative:

Approximately 20 mins after departure, the 2 flight attendants in coach noticed an unusual petroleum odor around row 12. I notified the captain, who came back to smell for himself. He decided to divert to raleigh airport. All passenger deplaned in raleigh and the mechanics found the problem and repaired it. It was a burned out light ballast, which they replaced. We continued on to mia without further incident.

Title: FLT ATTENDANT RPT REGARDING AN MD80 ON WHICH THE FLT ATTENDANTS SMELL AN UNUSUAL PETROLEUM ODOR. CAPT CHKED IT OUT AND DECIDED TO DIVERT TO RDU.

Narrative: APPROX 20 MINS AFTER DEP, THE 2 FLT ATTENDANTS IN COACH NOTICED AN UNUSUAL PETROLEUM ODOR AROUND ROW 12. I NOTIFIED THE CAPT, WHO CAME BACK TO SMELL FOR HIMSELF. HE DECIDED TO DIVERT TO RALEIGH ARPT. ALL PAX DEPLANED IN RALEIGH AND THE MECHS FOUND THE PROB AND REPAIRED IT. IT WAS A BURNED OUT LIGHT BALLAST, WHICH THEY REPLACED. WE CONTINUED ON TO MIA WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
