Narrative:

During engine start the 'continuous' egt limit of 725 degrees C was exceeded (to 747 degrees C) of 1 second. The 750 degrees C limit 'for 30 seconds' was not exceeded. We, as the crew, informed maintenance that we had a hot start while on the ground interphone, and tried the engine again -- this attempt was successful. The hot start checklist told us to record the peak temperature and duration. We did this en route to our destination to dfw. Upon arrival, we became concerned that we had flown with an open write-up after maintenance grounded the airplane pending a borescope inspection. I feel that our operations manual and checklist should be more specific as to the proper paperwork process following a hot start. Instead of the checklist saying 'record,' it should say 'enter in logbook' and 'immediately inform maintenance of open writeup' or 'enter as a comment in logbook.' interpretation was vague and not concise as to what exactly to do about an engine hot start procedure write-up.

Title: FLC OF A CARGO DC8-71 OPERATED ACFT WITH AN OPEN ITEM DUE TO A HOT START PRIOR TO TKOF AND RECORDED ENRTE TO DEST IN THE LOGBOOK. MAINT GNDED THE ACFT UPON ARR FOR AN ENG INSPECTION.

Narrative: DURING ENG START THE 'CONTINUOUS' EGT LIMIT OF 725 DEGS C WAS EXCEEDED (TO 747 DEGS C) OF 1 SECOND. THE 750 DEGS C LIMIT 'FOR 30 SECONDS' WAS NOT EXCEEDED. WE, AS THE CREW, INFORMED MAINT THAT WE HAD A HOT START WHILE ON THE GND INTERPHONE, AND TRIED THE ENG AGAIN -- THIS ATTEMPT WAS SUCCESSFUL. THE HOT START CHKLIST TOLD US TO RECORD THE PEAK TEMP AND DURATION. WE DID THIS ENRTE TO OUR DEST TO DFW. UPON ARR, WE BECAME CONCERNED THAT WE HAD FLOWN WITH AN OPEN WRITE-UP AFTER MAINT GNDED THE AIRPLANE PENDING A BORESCOPE INSPECTION. I FEEL THAT OUR OPS MANUAL AND CHKLIST SHOULD BE MORE SPECIFIC AS TO THE PROPER PAPERWORK PROCESS FOLLOWING A HOT START. INSTEAD OF THE CHKLIST SAYING 'RECORD,' IT SHOULD SAY 'ENTER IN LOGBOOK' AND 'IMMEDIATELY INFORM MAINT OF OPEN WRITEUP' OR 'ENTER AS A COMMENT IN LOGBOOK.' INTERP WAS VAGUE AND NOT CONCISE AS TO WHAT EXACTLY TO DO ABOUT AN ENG HOT START PROC WRITE-UP.
