Flight crew of a B737-300 overshot assigned cruise altitude due to forgetting to reset the altitude alerter to the newly assigned lower altitude during the climb. They caught their mistake and returned to assigned altitude and notified ATC accordingly.

Narrative:
Cleared to FL370 out of maf to dal. We requested and were cleared to level at FL330. We failed to reset the altitude alert system to the new lower altitude. We realized our error as we passed through FL337 and notified ATC. We returned to FL330. No conflicts were noted.

Narrative: CLRED TO FL370 OUT OF MAF TO DAL. WE REQUESTED AND WERE CLRED TO LEVEL AT FL330. WE FAILED TO RESET THE ALT ALERT SYS TO THE NEW LOWER ALT. WE REALIZED OUR ERROR AS WE PASSED THROUGH FL337 AND NOTIFIED ATC. WE RETURNED TO FL330. NO CONFLICTS WERE NOTED.
