Narrative:

After performing a thorough preflight, which included a visual examination of the landing gear, brakes, and its components, we then started the aircraft and performed a pretkof checklist, which included checking the brakes on both the pilot's and copilot's side. All checks showed proper operation. We then started taxiing at normal taxi speed to position for takeoff out of runway 20L at pdk. While taxiing, neither brakes nor steering showed any abnormalities. We started the takeoff roll and at approximately 60-65 KTS the airplane started to pull to the left. While attempting to maintain the centerline, the aircraft continued pulling even harder to the left and we immediately aborted the takeoff. The airplane kept pulling to the left, we hit a taxi light and came to a complete stop off the runway. We then performed emergency shutdown of the airplane. We exited the airplane and saw an incredible amount of smoke coming from the left main gear outer tire and disc brake the tire was scorched and totally locked up and its disc brake was extremely hot and smoking. Due to the locked and scorched condition of the left tire, we were unable to move the airplane until the mechanic came out and assisted us to do so. Based on our conversation with the mechanic, he concluded that this incident occurred due to a mechanical malfunction of the left main gear outer brake.

Title: A FAIRCHILD SA227 ON TKOF ROLL WAS UNABLE TO KEEP ACFT ALIGNED WITH THE RWY CTRLINE DUE TO HARD PULLING TO THE L CAUSED BY A FAILED #1 BRAKE.

Narrative: AFTER PERFORMING A THOROUGH PREFLT, WHICH INCLUDED A VISUAL EXAMINATION OF THE LNDG GEAR, BRAKES, AND ITS COMPONENTS, WE THEN STARTED THE ACFT AND PERFORMED A PRETKOF CHKLIST, WHICH INCLUDED CHKING THE BRAKES ON BOTH THE PLT'S AND COPLT'S SIDE. ALL CHKS SHOWED PROPER OP. WE THEN STARTED TAXIING AT NORMAL TAXI SPD TO POS FOR TKOF OUT OF RWY 20L AT PDK. WHILE TAXIING, NEITHER BRAKES NOR STEERING SHOWED ANY ABNORMALITIES. WE STARTED THE TKOF ROLL AND AT APPROX 60-65 KTS THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO PULL TO THE L. BASED ON OUR CONVERSATION WITH THE MECH, HE CONCLUDED THAT THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED DUE TO A MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION OF THE L MAIN GEAR OUTER BRAKE.
