Narrative:

On approach into dfw airfield, cleared for ILS runway 18R at 3000 ft MSL. Established on localizer inside of 10 mi, cleared to descend to 2400 ft MSL. Below GS, a gradual descent is initiated. At 1900 ft MSL it is realized we are inside the FAF below GS, descending. Upon recognition, a correction back to GS is initiated, at which time approach control makes a radio call advising of low altitude warning. GS captured and an uneventful safe landing is made on runway 18R. Contributing factors: 1) beginning of bad WX season (not spooled up for instrument approach, been doing many visuals). 2) long day and been on duty 4 days. 3) did not have approach chart out. Not anticipating low ceilings. 4) a good briefing had been accomplished. 5) asked to maintain 180 KTS to FAF, a little faster than normal. 6) cleared to lower altitude at a critical point instead of just intercepting GS at stable altitude (3000 ft MSL). The problem was discovered by PF. However, a radio call came from controller shortly after corrective action had been initiated. Corrective action was to add power and recapture GS.

Title: AN ACR MLG PIC ADMITS TO AN ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT ON APCH AT NIGHT INTO DFW WITH A 500 FT CEILING. CFIT.

Narrative: ON APCH INTO DFW AIRFIELD, CLRED FOR ILS RWY 18R AT 3000 FT MSL. ESTABLISHED ON LOC INSIDE OF 10 MI, CLRED TO DSND TO 2400 FT MSL. BELOW GS, A GRADUAL DSCNT IS INITIATED. AT 1900 FT MSL IT IS REALIZED WE ARE INSIDE THE FAF BELOW GS, DSNDING. UPON RECOGNITION, A CORRECTION BACK TO GS IS INITIATED, AT WHICH TIME APCH CTL MAKES A RADIO CALL ADVISING OF LOW ALT WARNING. GS CAPTURED AND AN UNEVENTFUL SAFE LNDG IS MADE ON RWY 18R. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) BEGINNING OF BAD WX SEASON (NOT SPOOLED UP FOR INST APCH, BEEN DOING MANY VISUALS). 2) LONG DAY AND BEEN ON DUTY 4 DAYS. 3) DID NOT HAVE APCH CHART OUT. NOT ANTICIPATING LOW CEILINGS. 4) A GOOD BRIEFING HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. 5) ASKED TO MAINTAIN 180 KTS TO FAF, A LITTLE FASTER THAN NORMAL. 6) CLRED TO LOWER ALT AT A CRITICAL POINT INSTEAD OF JUST INTERCEPTING GS AT STABLE ALT (3000 FT MSL). THE PROB WAS DISCOVERED BY PF. HOWEVER, A RADIO CALL CAME FROM CTLR SHORTLY AFTER CORRECTIVE ACTION HAD BEEN INITIATED. CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS TO ADD PWR AND RECAPTURE GS.
