Narrative:

While first officer was in lavatory, ZTL said to expect an altitude change to FL350 (we were at FL330). After the first officer re- entered, we were given a frequency change. The next controller said to climb to FL370. We read back FL370 and set it in the MCP. I remarked to the first officer that it was odd we were given FL370 after being told to expect FL350. He agreed. Passing FL355, the controller stated that we had been cleared to FL350 and we initiated a descent. After landing, I called ZTL, and they said that we had both received and read back a clearance to FL370. We could have queried the controller when the clearance given to us was not the same as our expectations.

Title: A B737-200 CREW CLBS ABOVE WHAT ATC SAYS WAS THEIR ASSIGNED ALT OF FL350. FLT HAD BEEN ASSIGNED FL370 BY SAME CTLR.

Narrative: WHILE FO WAS IN LAVATORY, ZTL SAID TO EXPECT AN ALT CHANGE TO FL350 (WE WERE AT FL330). AFTER THE FO RE- ENTERED, WE WERE GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE. THE NEXT CTLR SAID TO CLB TO FL370. WE READ BACK FL370 AND SET IT IN THE MCP. I REMARKED TO THE FO THAT IT WAS ODD WE WERE GIVEN FL370 AFTER BEING TOLD TO EXPECT FL350. HE AGREED. PASSING FL355, THE CTLR STATED THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL350 AND WE INITIATED A DSCNT. AFTER LNDG, I CALLED ZTL, AND THEY SAID THAT WE HAD BOTH RECEIVED AND READ BACK A CLRNC TO FL370. WE COULD HAVE QUERIED THE CTLR WHEN THE CLRNC GIVEN TO US WAS NOT THE SAME AS OUR EXPECTATIONS.
