Narrative:

At FL250, flight attendant called the flight deck to ask if the aircraft was the one with a 'no live animal' restr. Captain responded, yes MEL xx-xx-X. She said she heard a dog barking in the back of aircraft at the gate and suspected a live animal aboard. I (first officer) checked cargo slip and it indicated a live animal on board. Although box was checked, ZZZ personnel did not verbally advise us. Release did not show restr as required. Captain informed ATC of situation. Captain requested 10000 ft in order to reach a higher ambient air temperature and a shortcut to vhp. Dispatch (company) was contacted to confirm adequate fuel on board. Proceeded to cvg without further incident. Upon inspection of cargo bay at gate, found dog to be alive.
