Narrative:

After landing on runway 21L at dtw and clearing the runway on taxiway W2, we contacted ground control. Ground cleared us to parking via taxiway west, taxiway P4 and taxiway P. We proceeded northeast on taxiway west to taxiway P4 then northwest on taxiway P4. As we proceeded on taxiway 4 looking for taxiway P, we crossed over runway 21C/3C. After crossing over runway 21C/3C I noticed we had passed taxiway P. We then stopped and asked ground control for further instruction. After we told ground where we were he cleared us down taxiway M to taxiway M5 and back across runway 21C/3C to taxiway P5 to taxiway P to parking. While taxiing, ground informed us that we had crossed the active runway. After arriving on the ramp I asked ground if we had any conflicts with crossing the active runway. He replied no. In the future, I will taxi while paying closer attention to the airport diagram. Also, if I am unfamiliar with the airport, I will ask for a progressive taxi.
