Narrative:

I was in st louis, mo, and went to eat lunch. I somehow left my wallet at the restaurant. I took off from st louis, mo, and flew 1 hour (no passenger on this positioning leg) to chicago, il. Approaching chicago, we (myself and the other pilot) put the gear down. Our indications were that we had 3 green (gear down and locked) and 1 red (a gear door had not retracted or the squat switch was not sensing a good connection). We flew past the tower, ran our checklists and landed uneventfully. We taxied clear of the runway and shut down both engines. We coordinated for a tow to the FBO. We knew someone was coming to meet our aircraft and reached for our wallets when I realized I had lost my wallet. I knew then that I had just flown a 1 hour flight without a pilot certificate or medical on my person. I went to the FBO, called my company, and made them aware of my inability to fly. They chartered an aircraft to fly my trip. I called the FBO in st louis and asked them to call the restaurant and find out if my wallet was there. The wallet was there and the FBO attendant in st louis went to get it. I went to the hotel and monday morning I called the airman certification branch of the FAA and asked them to facsimile a certified telegram message to the hotel so I could fly until I got my wallet back. I had the facsimile that morning, and back on line duty. I never intended to leave my wallet at a restaurant and would have never flown if I would have realized prior to takeoff that I didn't have a pilot certificate and medical on my person.
