Narrative:

Captain flying. Shortly after vr call from first officer, I saw a large bird approach the aircraft from the left quarter of the nose. Bird passed under the nose and struck the right side of the airplane out of sight of the cockpit. Airplane yawed to the right slightly and began to vibrate. Landing gear damage was suspected. Shortly afterward, #3 engine overtemped. Engine fire severe damage checklist was initiated. Fuel dump was initiated. After engine was secured, a left turn was made to return to jfk runway 31R. Takeoff was on runway 31L. 2 engine landing was uneventful. Aircraft weight was 346000 pounds. Dump ended more than 5 mi from the airport. Emergency equipment met aircraft at taxiway V. No fire noted. Aircraft towed to gate. No evacuate/evacuation required. Note: unable to initially talk directly with emergency equipment on frequency assigned by tower.

Title: DC10 CREW RETURN LAND AT JFK AFTER BIRD STRIKE CAUSES LOSS OF ENG.

Narrative: CAPT FLYING. SHORTLY AFTER VR CALL FROM FO, I SAW A LARGE BIRD APCH THE ACFT FROM THE L QUARTER OF THE NOSE.
