Narrative:

Lost radio contact with ATC while on arrival into clt. Aircraft was handed over to me as captain left cockpit for physiological reasons. Never recall being handed off and missed frequency change though never given. Realized mistake and attempted to find frequency. Missed turn on airway while establishing communication. Should have inquired ATC as we began arrival.

Title: WHILE THE CAPT OF A DC9-30 WAS AWAY FROM THE FLT DECK FOR PHYSIOLOGICAL REASONS, THE FO MISSED A CTR FREQ HDOF RESULTING IN THE FO MISSING A STAR TURN DUE TO ATTEMPTING TO FIND THE NEW FREQ. WHEN THE CAPT ARRIVED BACK ON THE FLT DECK, CORRECTION WAS MADE AT ONCE.
