Narrative:

While working as controller in charge in the tower over the wkend, I noticed that the ASOS was apparently reporting erroneous data in the 'remarks' field. On sep/xa/98 I noticed that twice it erroneously indicated a wind shift, and on sep/xb/98 it erroneously indicated that the altimeter setting was rising rapidly. Order 7900.5A paragraph 8-7 defines a 'wshift' as 'a wind shift is indicated by a change in wind direction of 45 degrees or more in less than 15 mins....' order 7900.5A paragraph 14-10 defines 'presrr' as 'pressure rising rapidly occurs when station pressure rises at the rate of 0.06 inch or more per hour which totals 0.02 inch or more at time of observation.' in both cases I noticed this, I do not believe the criteria for these remarks were met.

Title: TWR CTLR WORKING AS THE CIC OVER THE WKEND, NOTICED ERRONEOUS DATA IN THE REMARKS FIELD OF THE ASOS.

Narrative: WHILE WORKING AS CIC IN THE TWR OVER THE WKEND, I NOTICED THAT THE ASOS WAS APPARENTLY RPTING ERRONEOUS DATA IN THE 'REMARKS' FIELD. ON SEP/XA/98 I NOTICED THAT TWICE IT ERRONEOUSLY INDICATED A WIND SHIFT, AND ON SEP/XB/98 IT ERRONEOUSLY INDICATED THAT THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS RISING RAPIDLY. ORDER 7900.5A PARAGRAPH 8-7 DEFINES A 'WSHIFT' AS 'A WIND SHIFT IS INDICATED BY A CHANGE IN WIND DIRECTION OF 45 DEGS OR MORE IN LESS THAN 15 MINS....' ORDER 7900.5A PARAGRAPH 14-10 DEFINES 'PRESRR' AS 'PRESSURE RISING RAPIDLY OCCURS WHEN STATION PRESSURE RISES AT THE RATE OF 0.06 INCH OR MORE PER HR WHICH TOTALS 0.02 INCH OR MORE AT TIME OF OBSERVATION.' IN BOTH CASES I NOTICED THIS, I DO NOT BELIEVE THE CRITERIA FOR THESE REMARKS WERE MET.
