Narrative:

En route to ewr on shaff 3 arrival, we were cleared to hold as published at helon fix to maintain 12000 ft, efc at XA15. Autoplt/FMC in operation. At helon, entered hold with parallel entry. Within 30 seconds of turn, we noticed 3 skydivers at 12 O'clock position and a jump plane about 2000 ft above, wbound. Then 3 more skydivers away at a distance of less than 1 mi. Aircraft taken off autoplt, turned and descended to avoid. ATC notified that we were deviating and were given a turn left to 360 degrees and descend to 11000 ft. Then a left direct to shaff to continue to hold. No comments from ATC.

Title: F10 CREW INBOUND TO EWR WERE ASSIGNED HOLDING AT HELON AT 12000 FT. DURING THE ENTRY INTO THE HOLDING PATTERN, THE CREW TOOK EVASIVE ACTION WHEN THEY ENCOUNTERED 6 SKYDIVERS AND A JUMP PLANE.

ACFT TAKEN OFF AUTOPLT, TURNED AND DSNDED TO AVOID. ATC NOTIFIED THAT WE WERE DEVIATING AND WERE GIVEN A TURN L TO 360 DEGS AND DSND TO 11000 FT. THEN A L DIRECT TO SHAFF TO CONTINUE TO HOLD. NO COMMENTS FROM ATC.
