Narrative:

First officer was flying. Center said descend and maintain 6000 ft. I read the clearance back to maintain 6000 ft and set the altitude bug. The first officer descended to 5000 ft. As we descended through 6000 ft, the first officer called out altitude. I said out of 7000 ft for 6000 ft, not realizing the altimeter was reading 6000 ft. I feel the first officer misunderstood the clearance and out of habit I just called out what I was expecting to see, and did not properly read the altimeter. Supplemental information from acn 411844: captain acknowledged radio called and set altitude bug to 6000 ft (first officer cannot see this bug). Passing through 6000 ft for 5000 ft, first officer called 1000 ft to go and captain acknowledged. After leveling at 5000 ft, captain asked why we were there (altitude). He said we were cleared only to 6000 ft and said to stay there and see if ATC says something. They never did. Center switched us to approach and they cleared us down to 3000 ft with no question in altitude. Normally this location where our question on altitude was is cleared to 6000 ft. Big question on who was right. In the future, I will write down altitude and heading clrncs even if the captain will not. Also, I will get clarification from ATC if there is a question.

Title: A CAPT'S AND FO'S RPT ON AN ALT OVERSHOOT ON DSCNT THAT DEALS WITH THE ALT CALLOUT PROC AND HOW IT FAILED THIS CREW DURING A CLRNC MISINTERP.

Narrative: FO WAS FLYING. CTR SAID DSND AND MAINTAIN 6000 FT. I READ THE CLRNC BACK TO MAINTAIN 6000 FT AND SET THE ALT BUG. THE FO DSNDED TO 5000 FT. AS WE DSNDED THROUGH 6000 FT, THE FO CALLED OUT ALT. I SAID OUT OF 7000 FT FOR 6000 FT, NOT REALIZING THE ALTIMETER WAS READING 6000 FT. I FEEL THE FO MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AND OUT OF HABIT I JUST CALLED OUT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING TO SEE, AND DID NOT PROPERLY READ THE ALTIMETER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 411844: CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED RADIO CALLED AND SET ALT BUG TO 6000 FT (FO CANNOT SEE THIS BUG). PASSING THROUGH 6000 FT FOR 5000 FT, FO CALLED 1000 FT TO GO AND CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED. AFTER LEVELING AT 5000 FT, CAPT ASKED WHY WE WERE THERE (ALT). HE SAID WE WERE CLRED ONLY TO 6000 FT AND SAID TO STAY THERE AND SEE IF ATC SAYS SOMETHING. THEY NEVER DID. CTR SWITCHED US TO APCH AND THEY CLRED US DOWN TO 3000 FT WITH NO QUESTION IN ALT. NORMALLY THIS LOCATION WHERE OUR QUESTION ON ALT WAS IS CLRED TO 6000 FT. BIG QUESTION ON WHO WAS RIGHT. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL WRITE DOWN ALT AND HDG CLRNCS EVEN IF THE CAPT WILL NOT. ALSO, I WILL GET CLARIFICATION FROM ATC IF THERE IS A QUESTION.
