Narrative:

During descent into ord, center gave clearance for us to descend to 12000 ft by 40 mi southeast of ord. It was read back, pointed out on MCP, and acknowledged by both pilots. Upon checking in with ord approach, they asked us to confirm our altitude as 12000 ft. We said we were at 12000 ft as assigned by previous controller. He replied that usually people were cleared to 11000 ft. No conflict occurred, but it makes us uneasy. Problem may have been a missed communication or maybe there was a reason center kept us at 12000 ft instead of 11000 ft.

Title: MLG CREW WAS ASSIGNED A XING ALT OF 12000 FT BY CTR CTLR. WHEN CHANGED OVER TO APCH CTL THE NEW CTLR EXPECTED THEM TO BE AT 11000 FT.

Narrative: DURING DSCNT INTO ORD, CTR GAVE CLRNC FOR US TO DSND TO 12000 FT BY 40 MI SE OF ORD. IT WAS READ BACK, POINTED OUT ON MCP, AND ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH PLTS. UPON CHKING IN WITH ORD APCH, THEY ASKED US TO CONFIRM OUR ALT AS 12000 FT. WE SAID WE WERE AT 12000 FT AS ASSIGNED BY PREVIOUS CTLR. HE REPLIED THAT USUALLY PEOPLE WERE CLRED TO 11000 FT. NO CONFLICT OCCURRED, BUT IT MAKES US UNEASY. PROB MAY HAVE BEEN A MISSED COM OR MAYBE THERE WAS A REASON CTR KEPT US AT 12000 FT INSTEAD OF 11000 FT.
