Narrative:

Eastbound on V39 at 3500 ft VFR between etx and sax. Called abe approach for clearance through their airspace (about 10 mi out). Told to stand by and stay clear of the class C airspace. Started a turn toward the north, judging distance from the fjc VOR, which is not on the field. Expect I got inside the 5 mi radius for a short time, before clearing around the north side of the airspace. Difficulty was the expectation of a clearance when already very close to the airspace.
