Narrative:

I intended to make a VFR departure to overfly the bay area en route smf, but the bay was fogged in, so accepted a loupe nine departure. No passenger onboard, except my non-flying son who was occupying the copilot seat. I explained to him how the GNS-xls flight management system works and displays the waypoints of the SID. My mind was preoccupied with the 2 days I had with my son and a maintenance check I wanted to do prior to takeoff. The ensuing maintenance inspection at smf and the taxi around an unfamiliar airport. I failed to review the SID details for a right turn at 1.8 DME. I talked my son through the takeoff and got him established on the 339 degree radial. He was doing quite well, until the departure controller told me we had missed the turn and I turned right immediately. As I glanced again at the procedure I immediately saw what I had failed to comprehend before. Adherence to my normal departure procedures would have prevented this error in the departure procedure.

Title: PLT IN TWIN JET ON FERRY FLT FROM SJC TO SMF WITH SON IN COPLT SEAT FLYING ACFT ON IFR DEP. THE PLT BECAME DISTRACTED WITH HIS SON AT THE CTLS AND MISSED TURNING AS REQUIRED TO A HDG OF 120 DEGS AT 1 PT 8 DME.

Narrative: I INTENDED TO MAKE A VFR DEP TO OVERFLY THE BAY AREA ENRTE SMF, BUT THE BAY WAS FOGGED IN, SO ACCEPTED A LOUPE NINE DEP. NO PAX ONBOARD, EXCEPT MY NON-FLYING SON WHO WAS OCCUPYING THE COPLT SEAT. I EXPLAINED TO HIM HOW THE GNS-XLS FLT MGMNT SYS WORKS AND DISPLAYS THE WAYPOINTS OF THE SID. MY MIND WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH THE 2 DAYS I HAD WITH MY SON AND A MAINT CHK I WANTED TO DO PRIOR TO TKOF. THE ENSUING MAINT INSPECTION AT SMF AND THE TAXI AROUND AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT. I FAILED TO REVIEW THE SID DETAILS FOR A R TURN AT 1.8 DME. I TALKED MY SON THROUGH THE TKOF AND GOT HIM ESTABLISHED ON THE 339 DEG RADIAL. HE WAS DOING QUITE WELL, UNTIL THE DEP CTLR TOLD ME WE HAD MISSED THE TURN AND I TURNED R IMMEDIATELY. AS I GLANCED AGAIN AT THE PROC I IMMEDIATELY SAW WHAT I HAD FAILED TO COMPREHEND BEFORE. ADHERENCE TO MY NORMAL DEP PROCS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS ERROR IN THE DEP PROC.
