Air carrier flight xyz from dca-ZZZ uneventful flight. Taxi inbound to gate yy. I was acting as first officer. Captain, in control of the aircraft, pulled up to gate yy. Person directing the aircraft continued to give forward signal after #1 engine struck jetway.
