Narrative:

Approximately 1 1/2 hours from our destination, we began a series of slow-downs and off course vectors for in-trail spacing to slc. Our conflicting traffic was another of our company's B727 (aircraft Z) that had originated in tul or okc. An L1011 (aircraft Y) that took off 5-10 mins after us from our origination airport landed 5-10 mins before us in slc. Proof positive that free flight will never work and is no more than a gimmick. 1 1/2 hours out is not a terminal delay.
