Narrative:

I called ground prior to movement on ramp and was given a VFR clearance to read back. Read back ok. Prior to entering taxiway I reconfirmed 'am I clear to taxi to runway 22.' ground replied cleared to taxi to runway 22. I understood this to be a clearance to taxi to runway 22 and wait for 'clear to depart.' I was not told to hold short of runway 22 and taxied to run- up area for aircraft run-up and then onto runway 22 awaiting departure clearance. Ground controller asked what I was doing and I replied I understood you cleared me onto runway 22, but not to depart. He said 'no only to runway 22 not onto.' I started to taxi clear of runway 22. He said no stay there and await departure clearance, which I did. I misunderstood his taxi to meaning as he did not say 'hold short of runway 22.' this could be a potentially dangerous situation. As a helicopter pilot, primarily, we seldom use runways or txwys and have been to srq several times in the past and found controllers to be easy to work with. As a newly minted fixed wing pilot I carefully listen to all taxi instructions due to my low experience. I would expect a 'hold short' instruction if a controller wanted this. Even though no other traffic in the air or on the ground was affected by this, these sits must be avoided for everyone's well-being. I will not permit this confusion to arise again and hope others will learn by this situation.

Title: PLT OF AN MO20C TAXIED ONTO THE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. GND CTLR CATCHES THE ERROR.

Narrative: I CALLED GND PRIOR TO MOVEMENT ON RAMP AND WAS GIVEN A VFR CLRNC TO READ BACK. READ BACK OK. PRIOR TO ENTERING TXWY I RECONFIRMED 'AM I CLR TO TAXI TO RWY 22.' GND REPLIED CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 22. I UNDERSTOOD THIS TO BE A CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 22 AND WAIT FOR 'CLR TO DEPART.' I WAS NOT TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22 AND TAXIED TO RUN- UP AREA FOR ACFT RUN-UP AND THEN ONTO RWY 22 AWAITING DEP CLRNC. GND CTLR ASKED WHAT I WAS DOING AND I REPLIED I UNDERSTOOD YOU CLRED ME ONTO RWY 22, BUT NOT TO DEPART. HE SAID 'NO ONLY TO RWY 22 NOT ONTO.' I STARTED TO TAXI CLR OF RWY 22. HE SAID NO STAY THERE AND AWAIT DEP CLRNC, WHICH I DID. I MISUNDERSTOOD HIS TAXI TO MEANING AS HE DID NOT SAY 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22.' THIS COULD BE A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SIT. AS A HELI PLT, PRIMARILY, WE SELDOM USE RWYS OR TXWYS AND HAVE BEEN TO SRQ SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST AND FOUND CTLRS TO BE EASY TO WORK WITH. AS A NEWLY MINTED FIXED WING PLT I CAREFULLY LISTEN TO ALL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DUE TO MY LOW EXPERIENCE. I WOULD EXPECT A 'HOLD SHORT' INSTRUCTION IF A CTLR WANTED THIS. EVEN THOUGH NO OTHER TFC IN THE AIR OR ON THE GND WAS AFFECTED BY THIS, THESE SITS MUST BE AVOIDED FOR EVERYONE'S WELL-BEING. I WILL NOT PERMIT THIS CONFUSION TO ARISE AGAIN AND HOPE OTHERS WILL LEARN BY THIS SIT.
