Narrative:

I went from mlu to F89. On my arrival to F89 I received my IFR clearance to M16. When I had taken off from F89 I called mlu approach to tell them I had taken off and to get radar contact. When I did, they said they told me to hold for release at F89. I did not copy that nor read it back with my clearance. In the confusion I canceled IFR with mlu and went to M16 VFR. I do not think I was in conflict with traffic. There was a misunderstanding with me and mlu approach. I did not copy hold for release. Maybe my mind was somewhere else but I thought I did what I was told to do.
