Narrative:

Took off and later was told we did so without a clearance, after talking to tower supervisor. He says we were cleared into position and to hold. This was done a few hundred yards from runway. As I was about to turn onto the runway, another plane looked lined up with our runway. When it was apparent he was going to runway 28L, I went on to runway 28C and pulled up to the end of the runway. Made comment about traffic crossing down the runway. When traffic was clear, we took off, after asking first officer 'all set to go?' he also thought we were clear to go. Was given heading after takeoff. We did not know until hours later about the discrepancy in the clearance. Could have been distracted by other aircraft landing, or long pause in clearance, I don't know.
