Narrative:

Descending to 10000 ft MSL within houston class B airspace. The actual altimeter setting was 29.82. The first officer and I thought the altimeter was 30.02. At leveloff at 10000 ft approach control said our altitude indicated 200 ft low, and at that time gave us the correct altimeter setting. The number was XXX from newark to houston. I believe when sits arise, the pilots and all other concerned parties (ATC) need to be alert. There cannot be enough xchking. There was not a conflict involved, but I still believe that this situation warranted reporting so it may benefit others.
