Narrative:

Exiting the runway, switched to ground control and was quickly given clearance to taxi via 'east-a short of '23' at A4.' I read back clearance, except stated 'A24.' the hold short of runway 23 was confusing as I did not recognize 'A24.' at that time my attention was diverted by conversation with captain over remarks made by aircraft immediately in front of us taxiing across runway 23 on taxiway at the end of runway 23. We were on runway 23 before I noticed the landing lights of a commuter just landing runway 23. Confusion with taxi clearance, fixation of following aircraft ahead of us and distraction of conversation with captain at that moment caused me to 'drop my guard' on 'holding short' of the runway. Supplemental information from acn 402680: we landed on runway 18R in clt and exited the runway on E4, then turned northbound on taxiway east, behind an F100 holding short of runway 5/23. Ground traffic was heavy and ground control was rapidly reading off taxi clrncs. We were issued our taxi clearance and continued north on taxiway east. As we were crossing the end of runway 5/23 on taxiway east, we were told to continue north on taxiway east to hold short of taxiway B. Apparently we were supposed to turn right on the taxiway just prior to the end of runway 5/23 instead of continuing across runway 5/23. This clearance misunderstanding could have been averted with different terminology. Because of our very close proximity to that taxiway while already on taxiway east, the addition of the words 'turn right' would have prevented the incursion.

Narrative: EXITING THE RWY, SWITCHED TO GND CTL AND WAS QUICKLY GIVEN CLRNC TO TAXI VIA 'E-A SHORT OF '23' AT A4.' I READ BACK CLRNC, EXCEPT STATED 'A24.' THE HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23 WAS CONFUSING AS I DID NOT RECOGNIZE 'A24.' AT THAT TIME MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED BY CONVERSATION WITH CAPT OVER REMARKS MADE BY ACFT IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF US TAXIING ACROSS RWY 23 ON TXWY AT THE END OF RWY 23. WE WERE ON RWY 23 BEFORE I NOTICED THE LNDG LIGHTS OF A COMMUTER JUST LNDG RWY 23. CONFUSION WITH TAXI CLRNC, FIXATION OF FOLLOWING ACFT AHEAD OF US AND DISTR OF CONVERSATION WITH CAPT AT THAT MOMENT CAUSED ME TO 'DROP MY GUARD' ON 'HOLDING SHORT' OF THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 402680: WE LANDED ON RWY 18R IN CLT AND EXITED THE RWY ON E4, THEN TURNED NBOUND ON TXWY E, BEHIND AN F100 HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 5/23. GND TFC WAS HVY AND GND CTL WAS RAPIDLY READING OFF TAXI CLRNCS. WE WERE ISSUED OUR TAXI CLRNC AND CONTINUED N ON TXWY E. AS WE WERE XING THE END OF RWY 5/23 ON TXWY E, WE WERE TOLD TO CONTINUE N ON TXWY E TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY B. APPARENTLY WE WERE SUPPOSED TO TURN R ON THE TXWY JUST PRIOR TO THE END OF RWY 5/23 INSTEAD OF CONTINUING ACROSS RWY 5/23. THIS CLRNC MISUNDERSTANDING COULD HAVE BEEN AVERTED WITH DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY. BECAUSE OF OUR VERY CLOSE PROX TO THAT TXWY WHILE ALREADY ON TXWY E, THE ADDITION OF THE WORDS 'TURN R' WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE INCURSION.
