Narrative:

Departed ewr en route to oak. On climb out ewr, multiple smoke indications and strong odor in cockpit. Accomplished checklists. Smoke indications eliminated with isolation of #2 pack. Some odor remained and could not be eliminated. Unscheduled landing in ord as precautionary (ILS runway 27L). Fire trucks alerted, followed aircraft to ramp and monitored opening aircraft doors, inspection of aircraft and freight. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated when the aircraft arrived at ewr the outbound crew noticed rubber dust and debris coating the lower fuselage and wheel wells. The reporter said maintenance was advised of the coating and was found to be rubber dust and rubber fragments from the previous landing on runway 4L which was derubberized during the night. The reporter said this rubber dust and debris was ingested into the #1 and #2 packs causing the smoke and odor. The reporter said isolating #2 pack helped somewhat but the strong odor remained from #1 pack which resulted in the diversion to ord. Supplemental information from acn 402186: after lift-off at ewr received multiple ECAM warnings of smoke in various aircraft compartments and zones (with accompanying lights on overhead panel). Also smelled strong burning odor. Donned oxygen masks and completed checklists for air conditioning smoke.

Title: AN AIRBUS 300 ON TKOF AND INITIAL CLB HAD SMOKE AND ODOR IN THE COCKPIT CAUSED BY DERUBBERIZATION OF RWY 4L AT EWR.

Narrative: DEPARTED EWR ENRTE TO OAK. ON CLBOUT EWR, MULTIPLE SMOKE INDICATIONS AND STRONG ODOR IN COCKPIT. ACCOMPLISHED CHKLISTS. SMOKE INDICATIONS ELIMINATED WITH ISOLATION OF #2 PACK. SOME ODOR REMAINED AND COULD NOT BE ELIMINATED. UNSCHEDULED LNDG IN ORD AS PRECAUTIONARY (ILS RWY 27L). FIRE TRUCKS ALERTED, FOLLOWED ACFT TO RAMP AND MONITORED OPENING ACFT DOORS, INSPECTION OF ACFT AND FREIGHT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED WHEN THE ACFT ARRIVED AT EWR THE OUTBOUND CREW NOTICED RUBBER DUST AND DEBRIS COATING THE LOWER FUSELAGE AND WHEEL WELLS. THE RPTR SAID MAINT WAS ADVISED OF THE COATING AND WAS FOUND TO BE RUBBER DUST AND RUBBER FRAGMENTS FROM THE PREVIOUS LNDG ON RWY 4L WHICH WAS DERUBBERIZED DURING THE NIGHT. THE RPTR SAID THIS RUBBER DUST AND DEBRIS WAS INGESTED INTO THE #1 AND #2 PACKS CAUSING THE SMOKE AND ODOR. THE RPTR SAID ISOLATING #2 PACK HELPED SOMEWHAT BUT THE STRONG ODOR REMAINED FROM #1 PACK WHICH RESULTED IN THE DIVERSION TO ORD. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 402186: AFTER LIFT-OFF AT EWR RECEIVED MULTIPLE ECAM WARNINGS OF SMOKE IN VARIOUS ACFT COMPARTMENTS AND ZONES (WITH ACCOMPANYING LIGHTS ON OVERHEAD PANEL). ALSO SMELLED STRONG BURNING ODOR. DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND COMPLETED CHKLISTS FOR AIR CONDITIONING SMOKE.
