Narrative:

Due to some morning haze, I filed an IFR flight plan from moore county airport (SOP) to smithfield, johnson county airport (jnx), both in nc. I filed direct to lee NDB then direct to jnx in order to avoid ft bragg MOA and pope AFB. Purpose of flight was to have some avionics work accomplished. A friend requested to ride along with me. He is a very low time private pilot who hasn't piloted an aircraft in over 2 yrs. I was cleared for takeoff and told to contact fay departure. My passenger had never flown in a high performance light aircraft and asked many questions on climb out and in cruise. Because I was distraction, I failed to contact fay departure. I received a call from SOP unicom requesting that I call fay approach, which I did immediately and fay requested I contact rdu approach just as jnx airport came into view. When I landed jnx, unicom requested I contact fay ATC by telephone. I explained my memory lapse and the person I spoke to was very pleasant but explained there were some C130's out there but did not indicate I created any problem with the C130's. I have never had this problem in 21 yrs of flying. However, my personal flying rules will include no cockpit conversation until my aircraft is in cruise flight and all communications have been solidified.

Title: A PVT SMA PLT FAILS TO CONTACT FAY DEP CTL AFTER AN IFR DEP FROM SOP, NC. HE WAS DISTR WITH A PLT PAX ASKING QUESTIONS.

I RECEIVED A CALL FROM SOP UNICOM REQUESTING THAT I CALL FAY APCH, WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY AND FAY REQUESTED I CONTACT RDU APCH JUST AS JNX ARPT CAME INTO VIEW. I EXPLAINED MY MEMORY LAPSE AND THE PERSON I SPOKE TO WAS VERY PLEASANT BUT EXPLAINED THERE WERE SOME C130'S OUT THERE BUT DID NOT INDICATE I CREATED ANY PROB WITH THE C130'S. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROB IN 21 YRS OF FLYING. HOWEVER, MY PERSONAL FLYING RULES WILL INCLUDE NO COCKPIT CONVERSATION UNTIL MY ACFT IS IN CRUISE FLT AND ALL COMS HAVE BEEN SOLIDIFIED.
