Narrative:

After being cleared for takeoff on runway 21C we applied power and began our takeoff roll. At approximately 100 KTS there was a bang and the aircraft shuddered. We aborted the takeoff and I told the tower we were aborting and remaining on the runway. The tower reported smoke from the right engine and I asked to have the emergency equipment called. The tower then reported flames/fire coming from the right engine. Based on that report we decided to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft. The evacuate/evacuation went smoothly and all emergency equipment operated properly. No passenger or crew members were injured in the aborted takeoff or evacuate/evacuation. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a DC9-30 pwred with P&west JT8D-9 engines. And the failure was contained as all debris went out the tailpipe. The reporter said although the tower reported smoke and flames from the failed engine, the fire warning system did not activate.

Title: A DC9-30 ON TKOF AT 100 KTS REJECTED THE TKOF AND EVACED THE ACFT DUE TO A R ENG CONTAINED FAILURE.

Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 21C WE APPLIED PWR AND BEGAN OUR TKOF ROLL. AT APPROX 100 KTS THERE WAS A BANG AND THE ACFT SHUDDERED. WE ABORTED THE TKOF AND I TOLD THE TWR WE WERE ABORTING AND REMAINING ON THE RWY. THE TWR RPTED SMOKE FROM THE R ENG AND I ASKED TO HAVE THE EMER EQUIP CALLED. THE TWR THEN RPTED FLAMES/FIRE COMING FROM THE R ENG. BASED ON THAT RPT WE DECIDED TO EVAC THE ACFT. THE EVAC WENT SMOOTHLY AND ALL EMER EQUIP OPERATED PROPERLY. NO PAX OR CREW MEMBERS WERE INJURED IN THE ABORTED TKOF OR EVAC. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A DC9-30 PWRED WITH P&W JT8D-9 ENGS. AND THE FAILURE WAS CONTAINED AS ALL DEBRIS WENT OUT THE TAILPIPE. THE RPTR SAID ALTHOUGH THE TWR RPTED SMOKE AND FLAMES FROM THE FAILED ENG, THE FIRE WARNING SYS DID NOT ACTIVATE.
