Pilot of an aztec PA23-250, pazt, lost control of the aircraft when the brakes failed during landing causing the aircraft to run off the end of the runway. The aircraft was damaged when it went off the runway into an unimproved area.

Narrative:

After landing roll as aircraft slowed I applied the brakes and the pedals went down to the floor, with approximately 900-1000 ft of runway remaining. Going around was out of the question. I tried pumping the brakes without any luck. Since there were obstructions on the side I steered straight ahead and rolled off at the end of the runway which caused slight damage to the aircraft. Runway overrun areas should be leveled with the runway even if here is construction. There was an approximately 24 inch drop at runway end.
