Narrative:

This was the third leg of a long 2 day rotation. We were an MD88 from clt to atl. Just prior to pushback at XA05, we were advised that atl had just issued a ground stop for all inbound departures. Due to our gate being needed by an inbound aircraft, we had to push off the gate to wait out our delay. I coordinated with ramp to push just clear of taxiway E11 facing north. At XA30 we were advised that the ground stop was lifted, and given a wheels up time of XA50Z. However at XA35 we were told that we could depart as soon as possible and were given a whole new route clearance. Our original route had us departing runway 18R flying the hornet 1 departure, haray transition. The new route required a runway 18L departure to fly the panther 5 departure, andys transition. We started the left engine and were cleared to taxi to spot X by ramp control. I was running the after start checklist and reprogramming the FMS. At spot X we were cleared to taxi to runway 18L. The captain told me to start the right engine. While I was starting the engine and running the delayed start, taxi and before takeoff checklist, and reviewing the new departure the captain continued the taxi. However, instead of making a left turn on taxiway C, he continued on taxiway M and crossed runway 18L. Ground called and asked us where we were going. When I looked up I saw a sign for runway 23. We stopped on taxiway M at intersection D. Traffic was landing on runway 23 and after 2 aircraft landed we were cleared to taxi down runway 23 and back taxi on runway 18L for departure. No other aircraft were involved in this situation. I believe there were several causes for this event. First, the captain got in a rush because of the delay and I think he got confused because of all the traffic landing on runway 23 and he assumed that it was the runway in use and did not verify the taxiway that he was on and he thought that he was on taxiway C. Second because of all the last min changes and the rush to depart I had all of my attention inside the cockpit running the checklist, starting the engines and reviewing the departure and new route. I was not able to review the new taxi route on the airport diagram page and did not realize where we were until after we had crossed runway 18L. Supplemental information from acn 399690: at spot X I oriented my taxi plans but was thinking runway 23, which is also located near spot X. This taxi led me to cross runway 18L thinking my clearance to runway 18L included that crossing clearance. Neither of us are well acquainted with the airfield at clt. I heard runway 18L but my mind planned the taxi referencing runway 23.

Title: UNAUTH RWY XING AT CLT BY AN MD88 CREW.

Narrative: THIS WAS THE THIRD LEG OF A LONG 2 DAY ROTATION. WE WERE AN MD88 FROM CLT TO ATL. JUST PRIOR TO PUSHBACK AT XA05, WE WERE ADVISED THAT ATL HAD JUST ISSUED A GND STOP FOR ALL INBOUND DEPS. DUE TO OUR GATE BEING NEEDED BY AN INBOUND ACFT, WE HAD TO PUSH OFF THE GATE TO WAIT OUT OUR DELAY. I COORDINATED WITH RAMP TO PUSH JUST CLR OF TXWY E11 FACING N. AT XA30 WE WERE ADVISED THAT THE GND STOP WAS LIFTED, AND GIVEN A WHEELS UP TIME OF XA50Z. HOWEVER AT XA35 WE WERE TOLD THAT WE COULD DEPART ASAP AND WERE GIVEN A WHOLE NEW RTE CLRNC. OUR ORIGINAL RTE HAD US DEPARTING RWY 18R FLYING THE HORNET 1 DEP, HARAY TRANSITION. THE NEW RTE REQUIRED A RWY 18L DEP TO FLY THE PANTHER 5 DEP, ANDYS TRANSITION. WE STARTED THE L ENG AND WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO SPOT X BY RAMP CTL. I WAS RUNNING THE AFTER START CHKLIST AND REPROGRAMMING THE FMS. AT SPOT X WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 18L. THE CAPT TOLD ME TO START THE R ENG. WHILE I WAS STARTING THE ENG AND RUNNING THE DELAYED START, TAXI AND BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST, AND REVIEWING THE NEW DEP THE CAPT CONTINUED THE TAXI. HOWEVER, INSTEAD OF MAKING A L TURN ON TXWY C, HE CONTINUED ON TXWY M AND CROSSED RWY 18L. GND CALLED AND ASKED US WHERE WE WERE GOING. WHEN I LOOKED UP I SAW A SIGN FOR RWY 23. WE STOPPED ON TXWY M AT INTXN D. TFC WAS LNDG ON RWY 23 AND AFTER 2 ACFT LANDED WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI DOWN RWY 23 AND BACK TAXI ON RWY 18L FOR DEP. NO OTHER ACFT WERE INVOLVED IN THIS SIT. I BELIEVE THERE WERE SEVERAL CAUSES FOR THIS EVENT. FIRST, THE CAPT GOT IN A RUSH BECAUSE OF THE DELAY AND I THINK HE GOT CONFUSED BECAUSE OF ALL THE TFC LNDG ON RWY 23 AND HE ASSUMED THAT IT WAS THE RWY IN USE AND DID NOT VERIFY THE TXWY THAT HE WAS ON AND HE THOUGHT THAT HE WAS ON TXWY C. SECOND BECAUSE OF ALL THE LAST MIN CHANGES AND THE RUSH TO DEPART I HAD ALL OF MY ATTN INSIDE THE COCKPIT RUNNING THE CHKLIST, STARTING THE ENGS AND REVIEWING THE DEP AND NEW RTE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO REVIEW THE NEW TAXI RTE ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM PAGE AND DID NOT REALIZE WHERE WE WERE UNTIL AFTER WE HAD CROSSED RWY 18L. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 399690: AT SPOT X I ORIENTED MY TAXI PLANS BUT WAS THINKING RWY 23, WHICH IS ALSO LOCATED NEAR SPOT X. THIS TAXI LED ME TO CROSS RWY 18L THINKING MY CLRNC TO RWY 18L INCLUDED THAT XING CLRNC. NEITHER OF US ARE WELL ACQUAINTED WITH THE AIRFIELD AT CLT. I HEARD RWY 18L BUT MY MIND PLANNED THE TAXI REFING RWY 23.
