Narrative:

The IFR WX briefings from FSS stated that temperatures aloft at 3000 ft were approximately 15 degrees C and at 6000 ft were approximately 11 degrees C and the freezing level was reported as 8000 ft. Our route was from gso to bkw via V45. Ceilings were about 1200 ft overcast at gso and our climb out was fine. Our observed outside air temperature was +50 degrees F (+10 degrees C) at 6000 ft, solid IMC. For the first 1/2 hour (approximately 40 NM) all precipitation on the aircraft was pure water. After that, in a 10 min period, approximately 1 1/2 inches of ice accumulated on the aircraft. ATC was notified during this period that we would have to land at the nearest airport (with an approach). We were unable to maintain altitude until between 5200 ft and 5500 ft MSL. During the entire encounter, the outside air temperature was +50 degrees F, which was also reported by a C310 in the same area. There were also no PIREPS for icing and no airmets at the time. We broke out of the clouds on the approach at 1500 ft AGL and the ice immediately broke off. The surface temperature at pulaski airport was +55 degrees C.

Title: A C152 PLT FLIES INTO FREEZING RAIN WHEN ALL HE EXPECTED WAS RAIN WITH A CONTINUOUS TEMP OF 11 DEGS C AT 6000 FT. FREEZING LEVEL FORECAST AT 8000 FT.

Narrative: THE IFR WX BRIEFINGS FROM FSS STATED THAT TEMPS ALOFT AT 3000 FT WERE APPROX 15 DEGS C AND AT 6000 FT WERE APPROX 11 DEGS C AND THE FREEZING LEVEL WAS RPTED AS 8000 FT. OUR RTE WAS FROM GSO TO BKW VIA V45. CEILINGS WERE ABOUT 1200 FT OVCST AT GSO AND OUR CLBOUT WAS FINE. OUR OBSERVED OUTSIDE AIR TEMP WAS +50 DEGS F (+10 DEGS C) AT 6000 FT, SOLID IMC. FOR THE FIRST 1/2 HR (APPROX 40 NM) ALL PRECIP ON THE ACFT WAS PURE WATER. AFTER THAT, IN A 10 MIN PERIOD, APPROX 1 1/2 INCHES OF ICE ACCUMULATED ON THE ACFT. ATC WAS NOTIFIED DURING THIS PERIOD THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO LAND AT THE NEAREST ARPT (WITH AN APCH). WE WERE UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT UNTIL BTWN 5200 FT AND 5500 FT MSL. DURING THE ENTIRE ENCOUNTER, THE OUTSIDE AIR TEMP WAS +50 DEGS F, WHICH WAS ALSO RPTED BY A C310 IN THE SAME AREA. THERE WERE ALSO NO PIREPS FOR ICING AND NO AIRMETS AT THE TIME. WE BROKE OUT OF THE CLOUDS ON THE APCH AT 1500 FT AGL AND THE ICE IMMEDIATELY BROKE OFF. THE SURFACE TEMP AT PULASKI ARPT WAS +55 DEGS C.
