Narrative:

While climbing through FL188 with climb checklist in progress to assigned altitude of FL190, ZME issued a clearance to descend to a lower altitude at pilot discretion. The new altitude was entered into the altitude alerter and autoplt did not capture FL190. The aircraft climbed slightly above FL190 before it was leveled off and returned to FL190. Supplemental information from acn 397629: at an altitude of approximately FL188 with climb checklist in progress, while climbing to assigned altitude of FL190, center issued a lower altitude to descend to at pilot's discretion. The new altitude was dialed into the altitude alerter and the autoplt did not capture FL190 resulting in the aircraft climbing slightly above the assigned altitude. The aircraft momentarily exceeded FL190, but was quickly leveled off at assigned altitude.

Title: A B727 CLBING TO FL190 IN ZME AIRSPACE CLBS ABOVE ITS ASSIGNED ALT WHEN GIVEN A DSCNT CLRNC.

Narrative: WHILE CLBING THROUGH FL188 WITH CLB CHKLIST IN PROGRESS TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL190, ZME ISSUED A CLRNC TO DSND TO A LOWER ALT AT PLT DISCRETION. THE NEW ALT WAS ENTERED INTO THE ALT ALERTER AND AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE FL190. THE ACFT CLBED SLIGHTLY ABOVE FL190 BEFORE IT WAS LEVELED OFF AND RETURNED TO FL190. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 397629: AT AN ALT OF APPROX FL188 WITH CLB CHKLIST IN PROGRESS, WHILE CLBING TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL190, CTR ISSUED A LOWER ALT TO DSND TO AT PLT'S DISCRETION. THE NEW ALT WAS DIALED INTO THE ALT ALERTER AND THE AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE FL190 RESULTING IN THE ACFT CLBING SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE ASSIGNED ALT. THE ACFT MOMENTARILY EXCEEDED FL190, BUT WAS QUICKLY LEVELED OFF AT ASSIGNED ALT.
