Narrative:
Piper cherokee transitioned dca VFR corridor from south to north at or below 2500 ft MSL, avoiding all restr airspace and flying below applicable floors of all class B airspace. 3 days prior to this trip a new transponder and encoder was installed and tested for correct frequency and correlation by an avionics company. On mar/xx/98 no ATC facility transitioned on a flight to north carolina indicated any problem receiving signals from this transponder. Then on mar/yy/98, while transitioning wilkes-barre airspace, ATC was unable to make radar contact with me. And later in the trip, btv could only make radar contact briefly. I suspect that I may have transitioned washington, dc, class B airspace without a functioning transponder.

Title: PA28 PLT HAS POSSIBLE XPONDER FAILURE AND TRANSITIONS UNDER CLASS B AIRSPACE IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH FAR, XPONDER REQUIREMENT.
Narrative: PIPER CHEROKEE TRANSITIONED DCA VFR CORRIDOR FROM S TO N AT OR BELOW 2500 FT MSL, AVOIDING ALL RESTR AIRSPACE AND FLYING BELOW APPLICABLE FLOORS OF ALL CLASS B AIRSPACE. 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THIS TRIP A NEW XPONDER AND ENCODER WAS INSTALLED AND TESTED FOR CORRECT FREQ AND CORRELATION BY AN AVIONICS COMPANY. ON MAR/XX/98 NO ATC FACILITY TRANSITIONED ON A FLT TO NORTH CAROLINA INDICATED ANY PROB RECEIVING SIGNALS FROM THIS XPONDER. THEN ON MAR/YY/98, WHILE TRANSITIONING WILKES-BARRE AIRSPACE, ATC WAS UNABLE TO MAKE RADAR CONTACT WITH ME. AND LATER IN THE TRIP, BTV COULD ONLY MAKE RADAR CONTACT BRIEFLY. I SUSPECT THAT I MAY HAVE TRANSITIONED WASHINGTON, DC, CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING XPONDER.
