Narrative:

Captain performed first half of securing checklist, leaving APU running and APU bleed open with right pack on. I (first officer) completed second half of securing check assuming APU bleed switch closed and both packs off. Secured with APU running and on ground service bus on APU. In this confign, the dc emergency bus is not powered and pack valves open. AC buses are not powered and heat exchanger cooling fans won't operate. Packs and associated ducting have hot APU bleed air passing through them and into aircraft. Ducts overheat and create smoke in aircraft. Fortunately aircraft was found in time, we as a crew had already left the airport.
