Narrative:
Remained below class B airspace while awaiting approval to climb through at 20 DME. I started to climb from 2500 ft to 13500 ft. The controller advised that I started my climb 4 mi too soon, while I was still in class B airspace. I stated that my DME reflected 20 mi and he replied that I was mistaken, but not to be concerned about receiving any paperwork, just watch out next time. The problem was not using my dead reckoning abilities to make sure I was outside class B airspace as a back up to my DME.
