Narrative:

Flight xx (air carrier) was level at FL310 and discretion to FL290. We were level at FL310 for approximately 5 mins when ZAU inquired about our altitude and we were climbing 200 FPM and passing FL315, 500 ft higher than our assigned altitude. We told ZAU and immediately corrected. Still can't figure out why vertical speed +200 took effect after we were level at FL310 for several mins. Plan to discuss with airbus guru at air carrier airlines.
